DESCRIPTION:
Take a tour of two of the most iconic symbols of Washington, DC: the Library of Congress and the Capitol Building.
Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with more than 168 million items. For one-hour we will walk inside the historic Thomas Jefferson Building, highlighting its symbolic art and architecture. We will take a look at The Gutenberg Bible, the first substantial book printed in the West with moveable metal type (before its printing in 1454 or 1455, books were either copied by hand or printed from engraved wooden blocks). Then, from the Visitors’ Gallery located just off of the Great Hall, we will see the Main Reading Room from above –which has been featured in movies such as “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.”
Going through a passage that not many Americans know, we will walk towards the U.S. Capitol -one of the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the country. For more than two centuries, the Senate and the House of Representatives have met here. After passing security, we will see a short film in the Visitor Center, followed by a guided tour of the interior spaces -we might end up standing up right below the dome.
